Buzzy with Ideas: Repurpose Your Corks into a Bee-Friendly Bath

Our Summerseat hives are buzzing with activity, and with summer approaching, they’ll be working even harder to pollinate our gardens and local flora. To show our appreciation for these tiny environmental heroes, we can create a haven for them right in our own backyards: a bee-friendly pollinator bath!

While there are many ways to build a bee bath, here at the Summerseat Village Collective, we’re all about incorporating sustainable practices. That’s where those leftover corks from wine nights come in!

Why Corks?

Corks are a fantastic, eco-friendly addition to your bee bath for several reasons:

Natural Buoyancy: Corks float effortlessly on water, providing a stable landing platform for thirsty bees.
Safe and Secure: Unlike smooth pebbles, the natural texture of cork offers bees a good grip to prevent them from slipping while drinking.
Repurposed Fun: Instead of throwing away old corks, you’re giving them a new lease on life and helping the environment at the same time!

Building Your Bee Bath

Here’s what you’ll need:

Shallow dish or tray (think pie dish, plant saucer, or baking sheet)
A variety of sized corks
Pebbles or marbles (optional)
Water

Instructions:

Find a shallow dish or tray. Remember, bees can’t swim, so the water depth shouldn’t be more than an inch or two.
Fill the dish with clean water.
Scatter your collected corks across the water’s surface.
If you have them, add a few pebbles or marbles for additional landing spots and to help weigh down some of the corks.
Place your bee bath in a sunny location, preferably sheltered from strong winds. Ideally, position it near flowering plants to attract thirsty bees.

Top Tip: Regularly refresh the water in your bee bath to keep it clean and inviting for our buzzing friends.

By creating a bee bath and incorporating repurposed corks, you’re not only helping our vital pollinators but also reducing waste. It’s a win-win for everyone!

Let’s work together to make Summerseat a haven for bees and other pollinators. So, grab those leftover corks, get creative, and let’s build a buzz-worthy bee bath.
